IE installation

supress the reboot in the IEAK5.5/6.0 kit this way (offering the user the
reboot from a install script wrapping the IE installation):

\MsIE\FLAT\WIN32\EN\ie5setup.exe /R:N /Q /T:c:\temp /c:"ie5wzd /F /Q:C /S:""\MsIE\FLAT\WIN32\EN\ie5setup.exe"""

It is the /R:N that supresses the reboot.

This is an extract from the MS IExpress install wrapper documentation

/R
Control or force restart.
Administrators can control the restart logic with the following entries:

  a.. R = /R:A (Default)
  b.. /R:= /R:A (Default)
c.. /R:N -- Never reboot, overrides INF settings in package
d.. /R:A -- Always reboot, prompt user with reboot choice
e.. /R:I -- Reboot if needed, prompt user with reboot choice
f.. /R:AS -- Always reboot, silent and don't prompt user
g.. /R:IS -- Silent reboot if needed, silent and don't prompt user
h.. /R:ND -- Tell Wextract to check for reboot state before running any RegisterOCX sections.  If machine is in reboot state before the install and that state wasn't caused by the package then queue up registrations in Runonce automatically. This usually is used for cases where an install depends on something that was installed earlier, but maybe hasn't finished for some reason.

Explorer Folder Pane Grayed Out

The problem of the Grayed out Explorer Folders Pane has been traced to a single registry key.

This one:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32

The Default value for this key points to the file which builds the Explorer Band. That file is either Shdocvw.dll or Browseui.dll. The file varies according to which version of Internet Explorer is installed. If this entry is not correct, the Pane will not be built.

Internet Explorer 5.5 uses Browseui.dll
All other Internet Explorer Versions use Shdocvw.dll

Using a registry file and merging that file into the registry can repair the problem on all versions except IE 5.5.

------------------------------------------------

For All Internet Explorer versions EXCEPT IE 5.5

Go to Start>run and type Regedit. Press Enter

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32

Highlight InProcServer32 in the left pane. In the right pane, double click on Default. Modify the value data in the box which will come up, by typing in the correct path to shdocvw.dll. Click Ok. Close the Registry.

Or you can download a file and merge that into the Registry:

There are two files, one for Win9x and ME, another for WinXP and Windows2000. This is because the path to shdocvw.dll is different in each operating system. And the Operating Systems use different registry value types.

Download the appropriate file for your operating system. The files are attached as text files. Download the text file and rename it with a .reg extension. Double click the registry file to Merge into the registry. If you are running Windows 2000 or WindowsXP, the file attached here is correct for your Operating System.

If you use Win 9x or ME, go to this link for the correct file:

http://forums.techguy.org/t59067/sd...e4cb04f6b7.html

-------------------------------------------------------
For those of you using Internet Explorer 5.5

Repair Internet Explorer. See if that corrects the situation. If not then doublecheck your installed version of Browseui.dll to be sure it is the correct version for IE 5.5.

To cover all bases, (note: The registry usually doesn't solve the problem for IE 5.5)
Go to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32

Click on InProcServer32

Make sure the Default in the right pane is the correct path to Browseui.dll.

If none of this helps, you may either Upgrade Internet Explorer or revert to the previous version and/or try another reinstall of Internet Explorer 5.5.

Page cannot be displayed (XP only)

Most of the Internet connectivity problems arise out of corrupt Winsock settings. Windows sockets settings may get corrupted due to a networking software installation, spyware. You may notice errors such as "Page cannot be displayed" or similar, in Internet Explorer. You will be able connect to the Internet, but the packets won't transfer back and forth. One of the main cause for these problems is the corruption of Winsock settings. In any case, you may use these methods to repair/reset the Windows Sockets settings to defaults.

The NetShell utility (netsh) is a command-line scripting interface for configuring and monitoring Windows XP networking. This tool provides an interactive network shell interface to the user.

IE7 Stuff

IE7 fix package - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

If you tried to uninstall IE7...your hosed

you can try to go into SAFE MODE and do a system restore (if you have system restore on), so in order to get to it you will have to:

CTL-ALT-DEL, get into Task Manager

do a FILE, RUN

type in "c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" or "%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" (might be c:\winnt)

this will get you into there and be able to restore you system back to a certain point

Upgrading NOTES

upgrading IE has always been a problem since Windows 95 and IE4...

IE integrates itself into the OS (operating system)

if you are trying to repair a Windows install that has upgraded IE, you WILL have a hard time trying to repair

the only stable IE upgraded I have seen is Win2000 from IE5 to IE6...IE doesnt seem to integrate so much

IE8 Stuff

IE8 and Vista -  .docx file download is turning as a .zip file

***this is not a problem with XP and IE8 (that security setting is not in there)
***this is not a problem in Firefox either

Problem

When trying to download a docx file that's been uploaded through the form, the .docx file is opening up .zip file in IE8

Why?

By default, Internet explorer 8 detects the file type based on content and not file extension - it ignores the docx extension and opens the file up based on what it thinks it is. Because .docx files are technically zip files, IE8 makes a technically correct guess that it's a zip file. (trying to be like a Mac)

Solution

Server-side:

A workaround is to configure your server's 'mime types' and add 'docx' as the

'application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document' type.

Client-side:

The 'feature' can also be disabled in IE8.
Go to Internet Options -> Security Settings. "Custom
Level" -> Miscellaneous section: Open files based on content, not file extension.

A good solution if you have Apache based hosting is outlined here: http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=162526

Also, a lot of info can be found on google using the following keywords: 'ie8 downloading docx files as zip'.

PDF browser problem

If you click on a PDF and the browser doesn' FONT PDF,< the display t>you probably have a Acrobat Reader problem...haven't found the root of the problem but its a combination of upgrading to version 6.0/7.0 and IE security updates.

it is a problem with displaying a PDF within your Internet Explorer Browser

if you get the little X picture here is how to fix:
start "Acrobat Reader"
goto "Edit, Preferences, General"
remove the checkbox "Display PDF in browser"
this will make Acrobat Reader come open in its own application and not run it through the browser.
